Animal Husbandry Associate

Are you a champion of urban wildlife? Have experience in wildlife or exotic animal keeping?

Ruffner Mountain is looking to hire an Animal Husbandry Associate. This position will assist in caring for the captive wildlife collection at Ruffner Mountain. The position as posted is a part-time position, but we will consider the possibility of a full-time position on a per case basis. Compensation is competitive for qualified candidates. The Animal Husbandry Associate will be responsible for maintaining high standards of care for Ruffner’s captive wildlife/education ambassador animal collection. Ruffner Mountain holds a collection of 20-30 animals, including native raptor and reptile species. This position will perform day-to-day procedures including, but not limited to, feeding, cleaning, animal handling and restraint, general husbandry, maintenance, and record keeping. The Animal Husbandry Associate will also assist their supervisor in animal training, minor medical procedures, and other duties as assigned.

This position involves stooping, bending, occasional heavy lifting, and working with and around potentially dangerous animals in a safe and responsible manner.

Position will be required to work weekends, some holidays, and alternative schedules as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience with animal keeping or husbandry in a formalized setting

  • Excellent record keeping abilities

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Must be able to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments

  • Can manage and evaluate small groups of volunteers/interns

  • Be able to clean and maintain animal holdings, which may include the use of chemical agents and special tools

  • Must be self-directed and self-motivated

  • Understands and appreciates Ruffner Mountain Nature Coalition, Inc.’s mission

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Must be First aid/CPR certified or willing to be trained and certified

  • Reliable transportation

  • Valid Alabama’s Driver’s License with current liability insurance

  • Knowledge of basic computer skills (including Word and Excel)

  • Candidates must submit to a background check

Preferred qualifications:

  • Degree in Animal Science, Zoology, or other related field

  • Experience in caring for venomous snakes

  • Experience working with a wide variety of native and/or exotic animals

  • Proven ability to utilize classical and operant conditioning training techniques
