Visual Ecology: Suminagashi & Shinrin-yoku Eco Art with Jon Woolley

  • Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve (map)

Registration for this program is closed. Please contact meg@ruffnermountain.org to be added to our waiting list.

A forest bathing trip involves visiting a forest for relaxation and recreation while breathing in phytoncides, or wood essential oils, which are antimicrobial volatile organic compounds derived from trees, such as α-Pinene and limonene.

Suminagashi means "floating ink" and is a wonderful way to create vibrant, striking patterns on paper. This ancient technique uses ink and water to create ethereal marbling patterns.

This lab workshop will focus on observing and heightening awareness of textures and patterns observed at Ruffner and learning how to create beautiful watercolor washes and other watercolor and marbling techniques to promote field inquiry and your artistic and mediation practice. Support well-being through sensory immersion in the forest and through establishing a daily watercolor practice. Shinrin-yoku is a recognized relaxation and/or stress management activity in Japan
