This is a FREE program for everyone!

Do you want to spend more time outside this year, but need more confidence being outdoors? Join our Naturalists at Ruffner Mountain where we will review the fundamentals of enjoying our greenspaces. This program is designed for our friends and families who want to spend more time outdoors but don't know where to start.  We will review how to read trail maps, appropriate attire for hiking, poison ivy ID and wildlife safety, and how to make the most out of your time in nature.  This program will include a short guided hike and a live animal encounter!  Ruffner 101 is geared towards our community members who are new to outdoor recreation and is appropriate for all ages. 

Ruffner 101 attendees will meet at Ruffner Mountain’s Nature Center (1214 81st St S, Birmingham, AL 35206)

Note: The animal encounter will include live nonvenomous snakes.  For the hike, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle.  The hike will be approximately 1/2 mile on uneven terrain with little to no elevation change (fairly flat).
