Birding 101

  • Ruffner Mountain 1214 81st Street South Birmingham, AL. 35206 United States (map)

Cost: This event is free for all attendees.  However, non-members will have to pay a $5 parking fee.  Members, please remember your hangtags so you can take advantage of free parking!

An event for novice birders to learn more about birdwatching, bird ID, local bird-related events, and ornithology.  This program is tied to the Alabama Bird Search Youth Challenge held in partnership with the Birmingham Zoo. For more information visit their website

Come to Ruffner, learn about some common birds and "bird words", and spend some time in the Habitat Garden perfecting your ID skills.  Some binoculars and ID guides will be available to borrow, but we will not have enough for everyone.  Please bring binoculars and ID guides if you have some.  Feel free to stay and continue your birding adventure after the event is over!

Note: This event is for absolute beginners, ages 8 and up recommended.  All are welcome, but the program will go over basic birding skills, such as bird anatomy, how to use binoculars, and how to identify common backyard birds.  We will also advertise some bird-related events in Central Alabama and discuss public locations to see certain species.
