  • Ruffner Mountain 1214 81st Street South Birmingham, AL, 35206 United States (map)

This hike is FULL. Please email christine@ruffnermountain.org with your name and phone number to be added to the waiting list.

Join Gary Bostany on a hike at Ruffner Mountain while learning the history and its early mining beginnings. View some of the mining relics, including an iron-ore crusher at mine #3. Learn about “The Old Mineral Railroad, ” the extended railroad system that serviced Ruffner and the rest of the Red Mountain ridge. Ruffner Mountain was once home to the Sloss-Sheffield Mines, where iron-ore and limestone were extracted and sent to the blast furnaces at Sloss.

The hike is over 3 miles total, usually about 3 hours, with moderate to difficult inclines and slopes. Adults and children 10 and up are welcome. We will meet at the Nature Center. Please bring water and any snacks to enjoy.

Gary Bostany is a volunteer educational docent at Vulcan Park and Museum, and a history buff regarding Birmingham’s early days of the making of Iron and steel.
