Visitor Services (Part Time) 


The Part-Time Visitor Services position is a Friday-Sunday support role that will frequently interact with visitors while providing correct information about the preserve, facilities, and the non-profit organization. 


  1. Ensure that the Nature Center is open and prepared to receive visitors by 9am on each assigned day of work, and closed and locked at the appropriate time on each assigned day of work

  2. Performs maintenance and light cleaning as necessary in both the Nature Center and Pavilion (trash take-out, dusting, restocking restrooms, etc)

  3. Some light office work, such as keeping all promotional and educational  items (trail maps, programs calendars) stocked and available for visitors, inputting data and writing daily reports

  4. Follows Ruffner’s protocols and standard operating procedures, including Ruffner’s Emergency Management Protocols

  5. Engages with visitors and answers questions on the phone and in-person

    1. Understands the trails - provides appropriate recommendations to visitors

       6.    Operates a Square Reader and cash register as needed


  1. Excellent communications skills

  2. Displays a genuine passion for environmental education and land conservation

  3. Able to deal effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of people while staying ‘on message’ in alignment with the Ruffner Mountain conservation, and environmental education initiatives.

  4. Willing to explain and adhere to scientific concepts and principles such as adaptation, evolution, biology and ecology

  5. Willing to work weekends consistently

  6. Organized, self-motivated and flexible; can work by themselves and work-well under pressure

  7. Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel, along with familiarity with web-based programs and applications

  8. Able to work outside in all weather conditions, lift 25 pounds, hike on uneven terrain for up to 6 miles, and operate office equipment such as computers, copiers, printers, and telephones

  9. Able and willing to work with, and clean the cages of, animals of all types, including snakes and insects

  10. CPR/AED/First Aid certification, or the willingness to acquire within 30 days of hire

  11. Reliable transportation


  • Spanish language skills

  • Experience working for a nature preserve, nature center, or land trust

  • Strong base of knowledge in nature, biology, and the outdoor world


  • Part-Time Position: 8 - 24 hours a week, Friday - Sunday, occasional events or assistance as available and needed

  • Compensation: $12 - $13 per hour

  • This position does not offer benefits, paid holidays or paid time off
